    Samuel Burke is listed as "20" on #1082 of the 1850 Russell County, Virginia. He married a lady named Nancy. We think her maiden name might have been "Webb". A Lucy Webb, aged 50, was living with them on the 1850 Census of Russell County, VA. There is also a child, Mary C. Burke, living with them on this 1850 census. A descendant of this line is: Imogene Verbal, St. Paul, Virginia. Also, KATHRYN BURKE GREEVER,a great granddaughter of Samuel Burke, address unknown at this time. Kathryn has a "Burke Book" at the printers in Sept., 1999: Iberian Publishing Co., 548 Cedar Creek Drive, Athens, GA 30605=-3408.     Notes:

    The will of Fleming Burke, Senior was dated Oct. 12, 1846 and was probated Mar. 7 , 1848 in Russell County, Virginia. (Will Book 6, page 121, Russell Co., VA.) It was proven 5 April 1848 & 21 May 1848. In it he gives 6 slaves variously to his legatees. But, one, he specified the following: "I liberate, manumit, and forever set free my Negro woman slave Betsy, now upwards of forty years of age, in consideration of her faithfulness in serving and attending to me and my family; and I set apart out of my estate the sum of fifty dollars to be placed in the hands of my son William, as trustee for her, or in case of his death or refusal to take charge of it, then in the hands of my executor, to be applied for the use and benefit of said Betsy, as said trustee or executor may think proper to apply it, until it may all be exhausted". The Motto on the Coat of Arms of the Burk family: Ung - Roy , One King; Ung - Foy, One Faith; Ung - Loy, One Law. Another possible spelling of the first name: FLEMYN, rather than Fleming. Fleming Burke, Senior had a brother named John Burk(e). That John Burk(e) married a Rebecca Vermillion. Fleming Burk shows up on the Russel Co Personal Propery Tax List for the first time in

    Notes:

    We think the maiden name of Rebecca who married Fleming Burke, Senior, might have been "Miller". I need to do direct research in Russell County, in southwestern Virginia. (Note: The 1850 census of Russell County, Virginia which contained his son, Fleming Burke, Junior, covers all of what now is Wise, Dickenson, and a large portion of the Southwestern section of Buchanan County. The suggestion that Rebecca's surname might be "Miller" came from Mary E. Skelton (Marietta, Georgia), a descendant of John Burke and Rebecca Vermillion. In the new database on internet from the Latter Day Saints, IGI Batch F867132, Sheet 27, Fleming Burk, born about 1807 in Russell Co., VA; Father, Fleming Burk; Mother, REBECCA MILLER". William Jessee took the oath of administration and acknowledged his bond of $1500 with Jessee Fuller and Vincent Jessee... a certificate of administration was granted on the estae of David Jessee decreased in due form." (Will Book 7, page 47, Russell Co., Va.). Elder David Jessee lived at Castlewood, Virginia all his life. The children of David and Catherine (Banner) Jessee were (12). There were seven ministers counting himself in this family, some were Methodists, others Baptists."
