Notes:

Isaiah Fuller Burk(e) was listed as 18 on the 1850 Russell Co., VA census,
aged 18 and living with his parents, Fleming Burk(e), Junior and Nancy Jessee
Burk(e). I am NOT sure that he died in Rose Hill,. Lee Co., VA. Also, there is conflicting information as to whether he died in 1877 or 1878.

NOTE: His son, Isaiah Fuller "Zade" Burke, was born three months after the
death of his father. My record shows that "Zade" Burke was born on June 20,
1877. That would establish that Isaiah Fuller Burke died in 1877, circa March 20, 1877. (This information comes from the son of "Zade" Burke, "I.F." Burke, who lived in Lexington, Kentucky in April, 1995). In 1998 I believe they live in Abingdon, Virginia. (in 2000 they again live in Lexington, KY).

In the Civil War, Isaiah Fuller Burke was a First Lieutenant in the 9th Regiment under General Lee. He was a P.O.W. at Camp Chase, Ohio in 1864. He was released in 1865. He was captured at Moorefield on August 7, 1864 by General Averal's men.

His first marriage was to Martha Ann Wilson in 1852.( The minister was David Jessee). Their son, George Burk died 14 years later. (This is data from the internet web site for Russell Co., VA. I had no previous record of George Burk.)

His second marriage, in 1862, was to Sarah (Sallie) J. Holdway, This information is from ginnyburke@sigecom.net

The will of Fleming Burke, Senior was dated Oct. 12, 1846 and was probated Mar. 7 , 1848 in Russell County, Virginia. (Will Book 6, page 121, Russell Co., VA.) It was proven 5 April 1848 & 21 May 1848. In it he gives 6 slaves variously to his legatees. But, one, he specified the following: "I liberate, manumit, and forever set free my Negro woman slave Betsy, now upwards of forty years of age, in consideration of her faithfulness in serving and attending to me and my family; and I set apart out of my estate the sum of fifty dollars to be placed in the hands of my son William, as trustee for her, or in case of his death or refusal to take charge of it, then in the hands of my executor, to be applied for the use and benefit of said Betsy, as said trustee or executor may think proper to apply it, until it may all be exhausted". The Motto on the Coat of Arms of the Burk family: Ung - Roy , One King; Ung - Foy, One Faith; Ung - Loy, One Law. Another possible spelling of the first name: FLEMYN, rather than Fleming. Fleming Burke, Senior had a brother named John Burk(e). That John Burk(e) married a Rebecca Vermillion. Fleming Burk shows up on the Russel Co Personal Propery Tax List for the first time in

We think the maiden name of Rebecca who married Fleming Burke, Senior, might have been "Miller". I need to do direct research in Russell County, in southwestern Virginia. (Note: The 1850 census of Russell County, Virginia which contained his son, Fleming Burke, Junior, covers all of what now is Wise, Dickenson, and a large portion of the Southwestern section of Buchanan County. The suggestion that Rebecca's surname might be "Miller" came from Mary E. Skelton (Marietta, Georgia), a descendant of John Burke and Rebecca Vermillion. In the new database on internet from the Latter Day Saints, IGI Batch F867132, Sheet 27, Fleming Burk, born about 1807 in Russell Co., VA; Father, Fleming Burk; Mother, REBECCA MILLER".
